The Small Vessel General Permit: the provisions relating to lubricants

In the United States the ecological lubricants are required also for small boats
The Small Vessel General Permit (sVGP) requires the use of environmentally friendly lubricants for all applications where there is the possibility of contamination of the surrounding water.
The EPA regulation, the US agency for environmental protection, is concerned with the environmental impacts of small boats and is even more restrictive than the VGP "big brother" relative to large boats.
Specifically the sVGP apply to boats shorter than 79 feet (24 meters), excluding military vessels and those for recreational use provided they are not used for commercial purposes or carrying of paying passengers.
The sVGP defines in great detail the measures to prevent, or remove any type of discharge or emission produced by a small vessel.
As regards the lubricants, sVGP defines specifically the proper maintenance procedures and precautions to avoid accidental spillages, also it imposes the use of eals (Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants) for all applications in which it is likely that the lubricant comes into contact with the surrounding water. It is possible to derogate from this obligation only if it is technically impossible to satisfy (for example, the lack of an environmentally friendly lubricant that meets the specifications of the manufacturer or the impossibility of changing the lubricant until the next service in the basin ).
The eals are defined in the report as lubricants "biodegradable, minimally toxic and non-bioaccumulative". Among others they are explicitly cited as eals certified products with EU Ecolabel, Blue Angel and Swedish standards.
The eals are therefore required for a large number of applications; such obligations may be satisfied through the use of lubricants PANOLIN GREENMARINE line: synthetic lubricants based on saturated esters specifically designed for Marine applications so as to minimize the impacts on 'marine environment and guarantee the best performance.
